A late-session push by speculators drove the most-active July contract to a high of $1,478 a tonne, just shy of resistance at $1,480 -- the bottom of a key overhead chart gap to $1,501, traders said. July futures closed at $1,475, up $17 on the day, after sinking to a low of $1,456. Spot May gained $15, to $1,452, while the back months rose $16 to $18. The market gapped some $10 a tonne higher at the opening and drifted in firmer territory for the bulk of the session, but with few fresh fundamentals to trade on, traders said interest was extremely light. They noted, however, that the market typically slows down at this time of year. "In April and May arrivals wind down," one trader said. "Consumption figures are all out for the first quarter. It's too early to look at pod counts. There's just not a heck of a lot to look at." He said the market may have gotten some mild support by concerns that Ivorian shippers were having difficulty fulfilling nearby commitments. Exporters and crop analysts in Abidjan said on Thursday Ivorian shippers with insufficient cocoa stocks to meet May contracts were facing a shortage of good quality export grade port arrivals. 251043 MET apr 97
