Light trade scale-up selling, particularly in the July contract, capped gains, they said. Spot May delivery ended up $31 at $1,411 a tonne after trading from $1,413 to $1,390. Active July closed $24 higher at $1,444, traded $1,447 to $1,426. Cocoa prices rose at the outset, gapping up $10 after a strong showing in London. Upward momentum in New York accelerated after buy-stops were triggered above the $1,405 level basis May. Traders were encouraged by today's strong finish, but said continued speculative liquidatation and rollover ahead of first notice day April 17 was likely to limit the market's upside potential. Additionally, they said a tightening of the nearby May/July switch as operators rolled May short positions into second-month July, was viewed as bearish. May/July came in to 33, from 40 at the close on Wednesday. Technically, traders said May resistance was seen at $1,422-$1,425, with a chart gap looming at $1,452 to $1,473. Support was noted at $1,395, followed by $1,370, a double bottom on the charts. On the July chart, near-term resistance was seen at $1,450, followed by a gap between $1,480 and $1,504. To the downside, support was pegged at $1,430, then $1,410, a double bottom. Volume reached an estimated 10,053 lots, down from Wednesday's official tally of 14,282 lots.
