Weakness on the London market set the tone for the day in New York. After gapping $5 lower at the opening, CSCE cocoa stayed in negative territory for the remainder of the session. Speculators sold steadily throughout the day, though scattered buying from the trade helped offset the losses, traders said. May futures fell $22 a tonne on the day, to $1,428, having traded from $1,425 to $1,445. May slid $21, to $1,460, while the remaining months were down $16 to $20. Today's downturn, cocoa's second broad pullback in two days, could provoke a test of support toward $1,395-1,400, but traders said the long-term outlook remained fairly solid. "People think $1,400 is here to stay," said one trader, noting the widening structure on the deferred July and September contracts. A strong showing on the Ivorian mid-crop, however, could prevent the market from regaining its bearth above $1,450 (basis May) in the near-term, traders said.
