Cocoa prices slumped early on, sliding $30 a tonne in the first hour of trading. But steady trade buying emerged toward the lows, providing support near the $1,430 level basis May. The market continued to recover for the remainder of the day, as locals squared books going into the three-day Easter weekend. "There was a nice bounce off fo the lows," one trader said. "It's indicative of good support underneath the current levels from the industry, and shorts that are quick to cover as well." Talk the forthcoming Commitment of Traders report would show a hefty speculative long balance set the stage for this morning's sell-off. Traders said they were looking for combined non-commercial and non-reportable positions to come in net long between 20,000 and 30,000 lots, up from 17,000 as of March 11. The CFTC data is due out on Friday, when both the CSCE and LIFFE are closed for Good Friday. CSCE trading resumes on Monday, while LIFFE reopens on Tuesday. Otherwise, traders have paid little heed the past few days to crop developments in West Africa. Cocoa purchases in Ghana continued to trail last year's levels, the country's cocoa board said on Thursday. The market also seemed unfazed by heavy rains in the Ivory Coast this week. A prolonged drought in January and February had threatened to shrink the country's mid-crop harvest, but crop analysts said yields would improve if the wet weather continued into April. With most of the this year's crop data already well-absorbed by the market, many traders appeared to have shifted their focus to the potential impact of big long position held by a London operator. Trade house Phibro is thought to have built up a physical cache of 300,000-500,000 tonnes of cocoa. "The market has really dropped the fundamentals in the short-term," said another trader. "It's really concentrating on what Phibro is going to do." Technically, the CSCE May contract would need to clear Wednesday's close of $1,461 to solidify its stance. Further resistance was seen at $1,475. Support was pegged near $1,422. Volume on the exchange was estimated at 6,550 lots.
