Most-active May futures ended $23 lower at $1,450 a tonne after ranging from $1,479 to $1,444. July finished down $18 at $1,481, while the back months closed $20 to $26 lower. Taking their cue from London, New York prices headed higher at the opening. But trade selling emerged at the highs and the market ran out of steam, dealer said. "This market didn't follow-through," one trader said. "We were looking for specs to buy it, but there was no volume behind it." Dealers said reports the Ivorian mid-crop may have escaped serious damage from dry weather could dampen sentiment. Crop analysts in Abidjan said on Friday the Ivory Coast's mid-crop cocoa harvest was likely to exceed 100,000 tonnes while rain could boost it to 160,000 tonnes or more. Earlier this week, other crop experts said the mid-crop could be as low as 100,000 because unusually dry weather had stressed trees. "If anything tells you more cocoa is around, it is going to weigh on the market," one trader said. "There are already plenty of stocks." Technically, dealers said May support was seen at $1,425, with sell-stops building below that level. A break below $1,425 could lead to a test of $1,403-$1,395, a chart gap basis May. Resistance was pegged at $1,490, with a strong psychological hurdle at $1,500, they said. After sharp fluctuations nearly every day, May cocoa added only $10 on the week. Traders said they uncertain which direction the market was likely to move next week. "You can't be a real bull or a real bear," a trader said, "or you get the feeling you'll get killed." Volume reached an estimated 8,164 lots, down from Thursday's official tally of 9,564 lots. 241024 MET mar 97
