Most-active May futures ended $23 lower at $1,450 a tonne after ranging from $1,479 to $1,444. July finished down $18 at $1,481, while the back months closed $20 to $26 lower. Taking their cue from London, New York prices headed higher at the opening. But trade selling emerged at the highs and the market ran out of steam, dealer said. "This market didn't follow-through," one trader said. "We were looking for specs to buy it, but there was no volume behind it." Dealers said reports the Ivorian mid-crop may have escaped serious damage from dry weather could dampen sentiment. Crop analysts in Abidjan said on Friday the Ivory Coast's mid-crop cocoa harvest was likely to exceed 100,000 tonnes while rain could boost it to 160,000 tonnes or more.
