"This market is very buoyant," one trader said. "There is a lot of speculative interest. It has its setbacks but it keeps proving itself." Most-active May futures surged $42 a tonne on the day, to $1,473, after ranging from $1,476 to $1,439. July finished up $41, to $1,499, while the back months closed $22 to $42 higher. Prices gapped higher at the opening, as expected, with upward momentum accelerating after the May contract broke through $1,449-$1,451, activating light commission house buy-stops, dealers said. Arbitrage-related interest early in the session was also noted. May delivery briefly breached key technical resistance at $1,475, but scale-up selling by the trade capped gains, dealers said. Although nothing new fundamentally emerged today, some market participants said a global cocoa deficit in 1996/97 after a surplus the previous season continued to underpin prices. "With supply down plus growing consumption, we are going to see the underlying rise in consumption chip away at carryover stocks," one analyst said. Additionally, forecasts calling for dry weather in West Africa over the next few days were viewed as supportive. Light rains in southern Ivory Coast's cocoa belt eased off in the last weeks after breaking a drought that had threatened to reduce the midcrop, crop analysts in Abidjan said Thursday. So far, however, cocoa trees showed little evidence of being stressed, they said. Technically, dealers said May near-term resistance was pegged at $1,490, with a strong psychological hurdle at $1,500. But to get past May's life-of-contract high of $1,526, traders said some fresh fundamental input would be needed. Volume reached an estimated 9,494 lots, compared with Wednesday's official tally of 8,244 lots.
