After cocoa's dizzying two-day rally, which saw prices spike up some 10 percent, traders said the market appeared overdue for a retracement. "The market went up about 120 points in two days," said Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast. "And cocoa does not go straight up." Most-active May futures slumped $37 a tonne on the day, to close at $1,414, having traded from $1,438 to $1,410. July finished $33 lower, at $1,439, while the rest sagged $33 to $37. Technically, dealers said a chart gap formed Tuesday between $1,408 and $1,395 basis May would provide good support, while resistance was toward today's high of $1,438, followed by $1,450. Fundamentally, the latest Ivorian arrival figures which were in line with last year's levels may have weighed on sentiment. Ivorian arrivals were reported to be in a range between 920,000 and 960,000 tonnes by March 7, compared with 940,000 tonnes in the bumper 1995/96 season. Ivory Coast has forecast a total crop of 950,000 tonnes for 1996/97 but commodities minister Guy-Alain Gauze said this week that it had now sold 800,000 tonnes of cocoa and had no more to sell. In other news, the Brazilian Trade Commission Comcauba said Bahia 1996/97 cocoa arrivals totalled 2,793,242 million 60-kg bags by the week ending March 9 compared with 2,568,268 bags by March 10 last year. While most traders and analysts said the market sentiment has turned toward the bullish side in recent days, many participants remained cautious. "The specs who expect a bull market may be disappointed in a slow bull," said Prendergast. "Pull backs should be expected unless the trade and manufacturers join in on the buying." An estimated 11,231 lots changed hands on the day, less than half Tuesday's official total of 26,737 lots. 131106 MET mar 97
