"Things have switched over to the buy side," said one market participant. "We are close to the point where short-covering has come to an end and flipping over to outright buying." "I think they realized its a deficit season and at some point this thing has to go higher," he added. Most-active May futures vaulted to a session high of $1,477, before a late round of selling by the trade cut into gains, dealers said. By the close, May stood at $1,454, up $40 a tonne on the day, after sinking to a low of $1,403 early on. July finished $35 higher, at $1,474, while the rest gained $27 to $49. "I think we can approach $1,500 basis May and the fundamentals support that," said Dean Witter analyst Corey Bell. "There is not only a going to be a deficit, but a smaller crop out the Ivory Coast and uncertainty about the mid-crop has made people lean toward the bullish side." A flurry of news this week from the International Cocoa Organization in London also buoyed sentiment. On Monday, Ivory Coast commodities minister Guy-Alain Gauze said the country's 1996/97 crop will be below one million tonnes and that it had now sold 800,000 tonnes of cocoa and had no more to sell. Additionally, comments by Phibro director Anthony Ward were perceived as friendly. Ward said he believed prices in London could hit 1,500 stg a tonne because of a structural deficit . Phibro is a major player in cocoa market. The New York market headed lower at the opening Thusday on the heels of a weak performance in London. The May contract slipped $11, partially filling a chart gap formed Tuesday between $1,408 and $1,395 before reversing course. Technically, dealers said May was likely to face near-term resistance near today's high of $1,477, while support was seen around $1,438. An estimated 18,030 lots changed hands on the day, down from Wednesday's official total of 11,356 lots.
