Scattered follow-through buying on the heels of Thursday's rally to seven-month highs pushed prices up some $16 a tonne early Friday, but trade selling emerged at the highs and buying interest subsided, they said. Traders said steady selling of the May/March 1998 and May/May 1998 switches also kept the market under pressure. Most-active May futures settled $14 a tonne lower, at $1,440, after ranging from $1,470 to $1,435. July finished down $10, to $1,464, while the rest slipped $8 to $16. Despite today's losses, May cocoa gained $115 -- or nearly nine percent -- on the week. Some traders said technically the market may need to correct further before it continues to press higher. "It may need another week of consolidation," said Allendale Commodities analyst Jim Cordier. "They are trying to turn the worst bear into a bull." Cordier said May could dip as low as $1,400, and then start to work higher. Technically, dealers said May was likely to face near-term support at Friday's low of $1,435, followed by $1,400 and a chart gap between $1,403 and $1,395. Resistance near $1,470-$1,477. Traders await the CFTC Commitment of Traders report due late Friday, which they said is likely to show a small increase in speculative long positions. "The funds have been adding longs, but the data reflects just through Tuesday," one trader noted. An estimated 11,278 lots changed hands on the day, down from Thursday's official total of 18,286 lots. 170943 MET mar 97
