ZAGREB, Dec 30 (Hina) - The president of the Social Democratic Party
(SDP), Ivica Racan, on Thursday expressed his belief that the
Opposition would win the upcoming parliamentary election.
"According to opinion polls, the HDZ is doubtless facing defeat,"
Racan told a news conference in Zagreb.
The SDP is satisfied with the turnout of citizens at the rallies of
the SDP/Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) coalition, as well as
with results in opinion polls, according to which the coalition has
great chances of winning the election.
"Citizens have recognised in our coalition a force which can make
changes happen and lead the country out of the deep crisis it is in,"
he said, expecting the Opposition Six would win more than the 85
parliamentary seats, mentioned in a 'Globus' daily opinion poll.
The new composition of the Croatian National Sabor will most
probably have 150 members.
Tihomir Ladisic, spokesman for the coalition, said the campaign for
the January 3 election was one of "the most confusing (campaigns),
especially because of Croatian Television (HTV)."
The coalition campaign cost four million kuna, of which part was
secured from the state budget and part through donations. The
parties shared the costs equally, he added.
HSLS president Drazen Budisa mentioned several objections to the
National Electoral Commission. Budisa believes it is illegal that a
number of polling stations in Australia and Canada are outside of
diplomatic and consular offices. It is impermissible for the HDZ to
send letters to voters with the help of voters' lists, the same
lists which the Opposition was denied on computer discs, Budisa
said, adding equally impermissible was the fact that a message by
the Pope, taken out of its context, was being used for promotional
purposes.
Budisa also objected to a statement by the head of the National
Electoral Commission, Marijan Ramuscak, that there was no way to
prevent double voting of Bosnia-Herzegovina citizens who have
Croatian citizenship, and the fact that Ramuscak allowed pictures
of Franjo Tudjman to be displayed at polling stations.
Budisa said there were indications of the army being
instrumentalised in the HDZ campaign in the way that soldiers
dressed as civilians were transported to rallies.
