ZAGREB, Dec 23 (Hina) - The coalition of the Social Democratic Party
(SDP) and the Croatian Social and Liberal Party (HSLS) on Thursday
asserted that the Government had been assuming, in recent days,
financial and other obligations that were beyond any public and
professional control.
According to a public protest of the SDP-HSLS coalition, these two
opposition parties viewed such conduct in the run-up to the
election as "unacceptable and unusual in democratic countries."
Their criticism referred to giving guarantees for the investment of
securities and other financial transactions that create great
obligations with which the parties would be faced after the
election, said Presidents of HSLS and SDP, Drazen Budisa and Ivica
Racan respectively, in the protest.
The parties also protested at the fact that big public companies and
banks, like Privredna and Rijecka banks, were sold ahead of the
elections.
For Budisa and Racan it was not sufficient to give only brief
explanations that means would be returned to the budget as the
public is acquainted with "neither political nor financial
interests of individuals who stand behind the latest acts of the
Government."
SDP and HSLS insist on the protection of the public and state
interest of the Republic of Croatia and its citizens. They demanded
that privatisation be conducted only in a transparent and open way,
within a clear strategy of the economic programme which must
guarantee progress and new jobs.
