Presenting the plan on Wednesday, Deputy Agriculture Minister
Tomislav Ledic, said the space for the sowing of winter crops
remained the same as last year, however, the area for the sowing of
wheat would be reduced by 10 percent to 150,000 hectares.
On the other hand, quotas will be increased for the sowing of other
crops: barley with an increase by 13.89 percent to 25,000 hectares,
brewer's barley with 16.66 percent rise to 7,000 hectares, beet
with 42.86 percent rise to 20,000 hectares and rye with even 100
percent increase to 4,000 hectares.
The aim of the cut in the wheat quota is to achieve a level adequate
to Croatia's spending, as this year's harvest resulted in high
surpluses, Ledic explained.
According to provisional data, this year, 952,260 tonnes of the
wheat were cut down at 22,942 hectares with the average yield of
4.31 tonnes per hectare.
Real needs are currently some 650,000 tonnes, the official said.
