ZAGREB, July 1 (Hina) - Representatives of the milling and baking
industries, gathered in the interest association Zitozajednica
d.o.o., agreed at a meeting on Monday not to buy the 2002 wheat
yields from family farms until the end of the year, when the price of
wheat should drop to 70 lipa per kilogram. #L#
Until that time, the industries will use reserves and buy the wheat
quantities agreed on last year.
Millers and bakers believe that the purchase price of wheat of one
kuna per kilogram, agreed last week, is too high, and that first
quality wheat from Hungary can be bought at 70 lipa per kilo.
The association believes that the government's decision, which
secures funds for covering part of the costs for the export of
250,000 tonnes of surplus wheat, worth up to 143 million kuna, is a
political deal made to "save the situation". However, the
association claims, the bill will have to be paid by tax payers.
Discussing possible solutions to the problem of surplus wheat,
which recurs on the Croatian market every year, the association
said the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry should determine the
size of the area to be sown with wheat, as in the European Union, so
that surplus was not generated.
