Copper pivoted around the $2,100 per tonne area, consolidating after its losses on Monday and none of the other metals showed any more inclination for robust movements. Three months copper ended the morning kerb at $2,100, up $5 from Tuesday, after holding to a narrow $15 range. Chartists peg support at $2,080, the region where the market bottomed out on Monday and Tuesday. Any serious violation of that level could send prices down to $2,000, they added. On the upside, resistance was expected at $2,130 and $2,150. The premium of cash over three months metal has calmed down after several weeks of sharp movements, including hitting a peak of $284 in late November. With tight December dates out of the picture, the premium has largely steadied, although it firmed slightly on Wednesday to $64/$67 from around $50. "There was some borrowing in the January dates today," said one senior floor trader, adding that it was probably linked to expected tightness around the January options declaration. Aluminium held slightly stronger levels achieved on Tuesday. "Sentiment towards aluminium is improving nicely with IPAI producer stocks falling by 433,000 tonnes, or 20 percent, since January whilst over the same period LME stocks have risen by just 297,000 tonnes," analyst Nick Moore of Flemings Global Mining Group said in a commentary. The market finished the morning at $1,533, up $3. Nickel was slightly firmer at $6,605, up $30. This was $95 above the fresh 26-month lows touched on Monday and even though several analysts expect stronger prices in 1997, they were not sure that the market could fight off another dip towards $6,400 in the interim. Tin eased marginally from a hefty bounce seen on Tuesday from 19-month lows hit on Monday, ending the morning kerb at $5,805, down $25.
