Traders said disappointed shorts began covering positions after early selling failed to spark enough momentum to carry the benchmark March contract through $1,355 a tonne support. "There were a lot of shorts leftover from yesterday," one trader said. "Once the market failed support it quickly headed higher." Most-active March cocoa rose $12 a tonne on the day, to $1,379, after ranging between $1,382 and $1,357. Spot December, which entered notice period today, ended $20 higher, at $1,330, while the back months finished up $10 to $18. As of Wednesday, December's open interest fell to 2,008 lots, down 3,996 lots from the previous session. March open interest rose by 2,660 lots to 42,092 lots. A total of of 416 delivery notices were issued Thursday, as well as 416 stoppers. Technically, traders pegged March resistance at $1,388-$1,391, with the $1,400 level providing a strong psychological hurdle. To the downside, nearby chart support was seen at $1,370, then $1,355. On the fundamental side, traders are keeping an eye on Ivorian arrivals hoping a clearer picture will emerge. Since the 1996/97 marketing season opened October 24, estimates of arrivals varied widely above 100,000 tonnes. In other news, Bahiia cocoa arrivals reached 71,973 bags in the week ending Nov. 10, down from 79,011 bags in corresponding week to Nov. 12 last year, said Brazilian Trade Commission Comcauba. Total arrivals for the 1996/97 crop to-date were 2,023,115 bags against 1,346,846 bags in 1995/96, it added. Volume reached an estimated 9,882 lots, down sharply from Wednesday's official tally of 21,022 lots. 151040 MET nov 96
