Today's activity lifted the market to its fourth consecutive firmer close following the market's recent slide to seven-month lows. But traders said sentiment was subdued, with many operators absent from the market. "The market is very neutral at these levels," one trader said. "It was very sluggish, many people were on the sidelines today." March cocoa rose $6 a tonne on the day, to $1,383, after ranging narrowly between $1,388 and $1,380. Spot December gained $4, at $1,337, while the rest ended $5 to $8 higher. Traders said the market received a boost from the latest CFTC Commitment of Traders data released Friday, which showed a sharp decline in the net speculative long position. Although traders expected a drop due to recent liquidation on the spot month ahead of its expiry, they said the steep 15,641-lot drop in non-commercial and nonreportable net longs in the two weeks ended Nov. 5 was larger than anticipated. "It was bullish because no one expect the spec position to be that small," the trader said. As of Friday, open interest on the December contract, which goes into notice period Thursday, fell by 2,914 lots to 10,709 lots. Volume was estimated at a moderate 7,252 lots, with traders attributing the bulk of the turnover to switch activity. 121126 MET nov 96
