Floor sources attributed the bulk of the day's gains to trade buying, but noted speculative participation on both sides of the market. Most-active March cocoa closed up $16 at $1,367 a tonne after trading from $1,370 to $1,342. Spot December ended $5 firmer at $1,310, with the back months up $9 to $19. Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson said a combination of factors contributed to the market's recovery. Bottom-fishing at the lows allowed the market to bounce back, he said, with momentum picking up once buy-stops were triggered. Strength in Sterling may have prompted some arbitrage buying of cheaper dollar-denominated futures on CSCE, he said. Additionally, Stevenson said traders continued to roll out of December ahead of its first notice day Thursday, which gave the back months an extra boost. Heavy speculative liquidation on Tuesday knocked December's open interest down 3,642 lots to 6,004 lots. March open interest rose by 4,157 lots to 39,432 lots. Turnover was extremely heavy at an estimated 19,623 lots. Dealers noted heavy trading of the December/March switch, which widened to $57, up from $46 at the close on Tuesday. 141005 MET nov 96
