Traders said frustration over the market's lackluster performance on Monday, combined with weakness in the London cocoa market, sparked a wave of chart-driven selling. "The market was disappointed by the weak close yesterday," said Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast. "London hitting new lows accelerated the losses." In New York, most-active March cocoa tumbled $32 a tonne on the day, to $1,351, its lowest settlement since late March, after ranging narrowly between $1,383 and $1,350. Spot December, which goes into notice period Thursday, also fell $32, to $1,305. Open interest in December stood at 9,646 lots as of Monday, down 1,063 lots from the previous session. London's LIFFE futures also fell to fresh seven-month lows Tuesday, with key March delivery ending at 925 stg. Traders said light scale-down manufacturer buying absorbed some of the selling and prevented March from breaching support at $1,350. Although fresh fundamentals have been scarce so far this week, analysts said a growing consensus that the 1996/97 cocoa yield would surpass early expectations was weighing on futures prices. Technically, traders continued to peg March support near the $1,350 level, with the next downside target seen at $1,335. Resistance was put at $1,365. Turnover was brisk, at an estimated 17,865 lots. 130934 MET nov 96
