Traders said continued short covering by speculators who had racked up a heavy short position during the market's recent slide to seven-month lows lifted cocoa to its third consecutive firmer close. But commercially-linked selling once again limited the gains. March cocoa rose $3 a tonne on the day, to $1,377, settling just off its intraday high of $1,379. Spot December also gained $3, at $1,333. After the close of business Friday, CFTC Commitment of Traders data showed a 10,510-lot decline in the speculative net long position on the week through November 5. Traders said the sharp drop likely reflected steady liquidation on the spot month ahead of its expiry. An estimated 5,838 lots were exchanged on the day. 111034 MET nov 96
