For much of the day, the expiry of December options set the tone for the outright market, as futures gravitated toward the popular $1,350 strike price. Scattered bargain-hunting by manufacturers also provided an underpinning. But futures succumbed to speculative liquidation pressure as buying interest fizzled, sinking to session lows at the closing bell. December futures fell $8 a tonne on the day, to $1,345, down from a high of $1,355. Second-position March also fell $8, to $1,384, while the outer months eased between $9 and $11. Today's close brought the market to the lower end of its recent range, as December looked poised to test key support at $1,341. If that level were breached, chartists said the market would next take aim at its recent low of $1,329. To the upside, December would need to clear $1,378-1,382, while resistance basis March was assessed at a chart gap between $1,404 and $1,408.
