Most-active December slipped through nearby chart support at $1,385 a tonne, slumping to a session low of $1,378. December ended just off the low at $1,379, down $18 on the day. Second-position March finished $16 lower at $1,411, while the remaining months lost $15 to $18. Volume reached an estimated 4,274 lots Monday, down sharply from Friday's official tally of 13,769. Traders said speculative participation in the market was muted Monday. They noted many fresh speculative longs in the market Friday, with March open interest rising 1,655 lots Friday, to 21,808 lots. "There was very good speculative buying Friday, but there was little spec activity today," one trader said. Technically, traders said today's settlement below $1,380 basis December could signal a drop to the $1,360 level. On the upside, they said December would need to get past Friday's high of $1,397 before filling a gap the charts between $1,405 and $1,408. Traders await the official opening of the Ivory Coast cocoa marketing season slated for Tuesday but the government has not yet fixed farm-gate prices and there is talk the opening may be delayed. "There may be an initial pop-up if it is delayed, but all that cocoa is eventually going to arrive sooner or later," a trader said. Traders also await the U.S. third quarter grind figures due Friday at 0845 EDT. Industry sources forecasted a rise between three and ten percent compared to the same period last year, with the majority anticipating an increase toward the lower end of the range. 151108 MET oct 96
