Light speculative liquidation pressured the market early on, traders said, but after failing to gain downward momentum prices languished below unchanged the rest of the day. The key December contract briefly slid through $1,375 a tonne support, but retreated after a bout of trade shortcovering, dealers said. Traders said the latest CFTC Commitment of Traders report, which showed a decline of some 2,000 lots in speculative long positions, may have provided some underlying support. In the two weeks ended September 24, non-commercial long positions fell by 681 lots, to 7,326 lots, and non-reportable long positions dropped 1,359 lots to 14,607 lots. The December position ended down $7 a tonne, to $1,377, after ranging between $1,388 and $1,374. Second-month March also ended $7 lower, at $1,405, while the remaining months finished $3 to $7 weaker. On the charts, traders said December's next support level was seen at $1,366, while the $1,400-mark would provide stiff psychological resistance. Traders are hoping upcoming third quarter grind data, due in the first-half of October, may provide some fundamental impetus for the market. They also await the start of top-grower Ivory Coast's 1996/97 cocoa season on October 15. Volume reached an estimated 5,700 lots. 011052 MET oct 96
