Traders said the most-active December contract's failure to fill in a gap on the charts between $1,405 and $1,408 a tonne prompted disappointed speculators to shed their long positions. "It did not fill the gap, which brought in some technical selling," one trader said. December futures ventured into the gap, reaching a high of $1,406, before settling at $1,397, down $5 on the day. The low was $1,389. Second-month March also fell short of chart resistance at $1,435, peaking at $1,434, but ending down $3 at $1,427. With commission house buy-stops placed above the gap in December, traders said the next overhead target would be near $1,425. December support was pegged at $1,380, followed by $1,350. On the March charts, resistance was seen near $1,450, while support was put near $1,410. The bulk of the day's volume, which reached an estimated 13,849 lots Friday, was attributed to heavy switch activity. Traders said a good amount of December contracts were rolled forward into March. Fundamentally, traders said strong European third-quarter grindings provided underlying support. The U.S. third-quarter grindings are slated for release next Friday. They also called a forecast by U.K. trade house ED&F Man constructive. Traders said Man issued a private report Friday, projecting a world deficit of 259,000 tonnes in the 1996/97 crop year. The figure was not yet confirmed. Earlier estimates of a 1996/97 global deficit ranged widely between 87,000 and 225,000 tonnes. Fueled by the strong grind numbers, December cocoa rose $41 on the week, or about three percent. 141125 MET oct 96
