Traders attributed most of the day's losses to speculative selling, but noted manufacturer-linked buying curbed the downturn and prevented a test of key support at $1,350 a tonne in the December contract. Benchmark December delivery ended down $3 a tonne, at $1,357, after ranging between $1,365 and $1,355. Second-month March closed $4 lower, at $1,386, while the remaining months finished $6 to $7 weaker. Volume was an estimated 3,504 lots. With little fresh fundamental input, traders expect the market to trade sideways in the $1,300 to $1,450 range. Although upcoming third quarter grind data is largely expected to be friendly and may already be factored into prices, traders are still hoping the figures will provide some fundamental impetus for the market. Third quarter Dutch, UK and Germany grind figures, due out from the end of this week, are expected to make a strong showing because of cool summer weather in much of Europe and a revival in chocolate demand in eastern Europe. "A year ago the grinds were artifically low because it was so warm in Europe," one analyst said. In other news, the Codex Committee on Cocoa and Chocolate Products agreed to defer a decision on possible changes to current standards for types of fat allowed in products labeled chocolate, but will continue discussions on the matter. Participants at the 16th meeting of the Committee in Thun, Switzerland were unable to reach any agreement about a new standard, which would allow certain levels of non-cocoa butter types of vegetable fat to be substituted in chocolate products, said Eva Zbinden, head of codex alimentarius service for the Swiss federal office of public health. Discussions are expected to continue through 1998, she added. 031025 MET oct 96
