But light speculative selling reduced gains and prevented a breach of resistance at $1,362-$1,365 basis December. Benchmark December rose $9 a tonne on the day, to $1,351, after ranging between $1,358 and $1,348. March closed $12 higher, at $1,380. Cocoa grindings, a key indicator of consumption, rocketed 42 percent in the U.K. third quarter 1996 from the same quarter a year ago, to 48,855 tonnes. Industry analysts had expected an increase of up to 20 percent. Meanwhile, third quarter Dutch grindings rose by 16 percent, to 99,549 tonnes, from 85,311 tonnes in the same period last year. Analysts had forecast rise of 10 percent. Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes said that while the grind data gave the New York market an initial boost, prices came off because the numbers were a bit overblown. The closure of the Mars plant in the U.K. in summer 1995 adversely affected U.K. 1995 third grind numbers. In addition, unusually warm weather in Europe last summer reduced cocoa demand, forcing manufactureres to decrease production. "A lot of people realize the U.K. grind was inflated because of the plant," Ganes said. "Also, the hot summer last year caused weak consumption in 1995." "The grind numbers for 1996 are higher because of better consumption due to cooler weather," she added. Traders await the German third quarter grind data, due in the first half of this month. Analysts are expecting a rise of some five percent from year ago figures. The U.S. third quarter grind numbers will be released October 18. Traders also await the official opening of the Ivory Coast marketing year, slated for October 15, to better gauge the size of this year's harvest. "The grind numbers were constructive, but the market took them in stride," one market watcher said. "Normally the third quarter tends not to attract too much attention because everyone is looking at the development of the new crop." Volume was thin Friday at an estimated 3,718 lots, down from Thursday's official tally of 8,028 lots.. 071045 MET oct 96
