Dealers attributed the bulk of the day's losses to commission house long liquidation, with a steady stream of sell-stops triggered below $1,350 a tonne in the key December contract. But manufacturer-linked buying stemmed the downslide and prevented a test of key support at $1,340 a tonne basis December, they said. The benchmark December contract fell $15 a tonne on the day, to $1,342, its lowest settlement since September 3, after ranging between $1,354 and $1,341. Second-month March closed $18 lower, at $1,368, while the remaining months finished down $14 to $19. Volume was moderate Thursday, at an estimated 7,762 lots. One analyst noted the market's technical stance appeared weak and said the December contract is poised to make a bid at its life-of-contract low of $1,290. "Cocoa got overbought here four days ago. Now I see it taking out $1,330 and running for the contract lows," he said. "Cocoa looks awful." Fundamentally, traders await European grind data expected from the end of this week. Analysts forecasted strong third quarter Dutch, U.K. and German grind figures due to cool summer weather in much of Europe and a renewed chocolate demand in eastern Europe. Traders also await Ivorian new crop arrivals -- due October 15 -- to better gauge the size of this year's harvest. The real key is the Ivory Coast crop," one trader said. "That is what we are all waiting for." "Certainly everyone will agree the crop is not as good as last year's. The big question is by how much," he added. 041134 MET oct 96
