Prices zig-zagged on either side of unchanged for much of the session, after an early speculator-driven rally failed at nearby chart resistance. Some buying on the part of commercial houses was noted, but overall interest in the market was fairly light, they said. "It rose early on short-covering, but once again a lack of follow-through buying pulled it down," said one analyst. Benchmark December futures closed at $1,367 per tonne, having ranged from $1,361 to $1,376. Second-position March rose $1, to $1,396. Volume was fairly low, at 5,099 lots. The market has put in a nominally positive showing over the past three sessions, dealers said, aided by surprisingly strong results on European cocoa third-quarter grindings. But the market would need to clear chart resistance around $1,375 basis December in order to continue to work its way higher. If not, a retracement toward recent lows at $1,345 was all but inevitable, they said. Traders said talk of a delayed start to the official marketing season in the Ivory Coast had little impact on prices in New York.
