German cocoa grindings rose by seven percent in the third quarter 1996, to 65,824 tonnes, several notches higher than what most industry observers had forecast. Germany's strong showing comes on the heels of sharply higher grindings reported in the U.K. and the Netherlands last quarter. "The grinds were fairly friendly toward the market," said one dealer. The grind figures -- a key barometer of consumer demand -- gave the market some sorely needed fundamental impetus, dealers said. CSCE December futures rose by $18 a tonne, to finish at its session high of $1,385, a nearby chart resistance level. Most of the gains, along with the bulk of the day's turnover, were posted during the final hour of business. Second-position March also climbed $18, to $1,414, while the back months gained between $10 and $19. An estimated 6,405 lots were exchanged on the day. Technically, December faces stiff resistance toward $1,395, with $1,400 seen as an important psychological hurdle. Chart support was seen at $1,375, with subsquent targets at $1,368 and $1,350. 101053 MET oct 96
