Speculative and commission house buying before noon pushed the most-active December contract to its highest level in over a month, after a breach of key chart resistance at $1,390 a tonne. The December position ended up $6 a tonne, to $1,384, after ranging between $1,376 and $1,395. Second-month March ended $4 firmer, at $1,412, while the remaining months finished unchanged to $1 higher. Dealers said most of today's activity was technically driven, with little in the way of fresh fundamentals to lend direction to the market. Traders await third quarter grind data due in the first-half of October and updated 1996/97 supply forecasts. On the charts, traders said December's next resistance level would be a gap between $1,405 and $1,408. Support was seen at $1,366. Volume was moderate, at an estimated 6,287 lots, down from Thursday's official tally of 10,541 lots. 301046 MET sep 96
