"Basically it was a technical move supported by fund buying," said Refco Inc. analyst Ann Prenderast. "It got over that critical $1,375-$1,376 (a tonne in the December contract) level." After breaching that initial technical hurdle, buy stops were triggered from $1,377 to $1,388, traders said. But origin selling stemmed further gains and prevented December from piercing the next level of resistance at $1,390. Most-active December delivery ended $23 a tonne higher, at $1,389, its highest settlement since August 23, after ranging from $1,390 to $1,366. Second-month March settled up $20, to $1,420, while the remaining months gained $16 to $20. Volume was estimated at 10,646 lots, up sharply from Tuesday's official tally of 2,271 lots. After moving sideways the past six sessions in thin trade, dealers said the market was due for a more decisive move. "It was more out of boredom," a trader said. "To see if we could take it out of the narrow trading range." Although traders generally brushed aside news the Ivory Coast would open its 1996/97 cocoa marketing season on October 15, Prendergast said it may have buoyed the market sentiment. "Seasonally, the market tends to go up ahead of the opening," she said. Ivorian Agriculture Minister Lambert Kouassi Konan said on Wednesday that the new cocoa marketing season would start on October 15 and that the government would soon fix the recommended minimum farm-gate price. Ivorian exporters expected little or no change to the recommended farm-gate price, currently at 320 CFA francs a kg. On the charts, traders said the December contract would need to get through $1,390, a double top on the charts, before a possible bid at a gap on the charts between $1,405 and $1,408. 261045 MET sep 96
