A sharp drop in the value of the British pound versus the U.S. dollar touched off a flurry of arbitrage sales early in the session, as operators abandoned the New York market in favor of sterling-denominated London cocoa. "The pronounced strength of the U.S. dollar led to an $18 currency-adjusted decline in the New York market," said one trader. But after gapping sharply lower at the open, the selling momentum all but evaporated and prices drifted in a narrow range for the remainder of the day. Most-active May fell $18 per tonne on the day, to $1,267, having traded from $1,264 to $1,273. Spot March eased $2, to $1,225, while the outer months fell $15 to $19. In contrast, London's May contract gained six stg a tonne on Tuesday, to close at 880 stg. Volume was estimated at 4,433 lots, with more than half the day's turnover posted during the first hour of trading. Aside from the day's currency activity, fresh developments were scarce, traders said. Arrivals in West Africa continue to trail last year's pace, reinforcing the market's steep contango. Hot and dry weather in the West African cocoa growing areas was expected to continue through the end of the week, but so far it was not seen as a threat to the region's mid-crop. Technically, traders continued to eye May's contract low of $1,252 set last week. Commercially-linked buying was expected to provide a buffer just above that level, though hedge selling by producers would likely cap any signficant upside momentum. Resistance was noted above today's highs, and subsequently at $1,291 and $1,300 basis May delivery. 191011 MET feb 97
