Steady trade pressure on the nearby March/May spread also cut into gains, dealers added. Most-active May delivery settled $3 a tonne firmer, at $1,277 per tonne, after ranging from $1,290 to $1,271. Spot March fell $7 on the day, to $1,227, while the remaining months closed up $1 to $5. Prices rose at the opening, encouraged by the market's recovery Wednesday off life-of-contract lows, as well as a strong showing in the London cocoa market. Dealers said upward momentum accelerated after May delivery filled a chart gap formed Wednesday between $1,277 and $1,281. But speculative liquidation prevented a test of key resistance at $1,291 basis May, and trimmed gains, traders said. Traders said much of the day's activity focused on the March/May switch, with the contango widening amid the perception of plentiful nearby supply. "There just seems to be a lot of cocoa around," one trader said. "It's pretty cheap and no one wants to buy it." Technically, traders continued to peg May near-term resistance at $1,291, with a strong psychological hurdle seen at $1,300. Support was seen at May's life-of-contract low set Wednesday at $1,252. Volume reached an estimated 18,162 lots, up slightly from Wednesday's official tally of 17,144 lots. 141055 MET feb 97
