Traders said focus remained on the nearby switch, as speculators continued to roll forward spot March into second-month May ahead of March delivery period next Friday. The March contract fell $18 a tonne on the day, to $1,269, after ranging from $1,288 to $1,268. May closed down $16, to $1,301, while the outer months finished $13 to $17 lower. Operators have steadily rolled March positions forward this week, traders said. As of February 7, March open interest stood at 15,069 lots, down 1,825 lots from the previous session, while May's open interest rose by 1,573 lots to 26,845 lots. Technically, after the March contract breached near-term support at $1,272, traders said a test of $1,255, its life-of-contract low, may not be far off. On the upside, dealers said March would need to get above the $1,300 level to pick up any momentum. Volume Friday reached an estimated 13,020 lots.
