Most-active May slid $18 per tonne on the day, to $1,262, having traded from $1,284 to $1,261. Spot March closed down $22, to $1,213, just off a new life-of-contract low of $1,210 set earlier in the day. The outer months fell $13 to $16. Prices headed higher at the outset, defying the pre-opening call, as speculators followed through on Wednesday's strong close. But after the buying interest waned, a break below $1,270 basis May prompted speculators to liquidate their long positions. Traders lamented the lack of interest in the cocoa market, noting volume this week has been extremely thin. Turnover reached an estimated 5,623 lots today, up from Wednesday's official tally of 3,974 lots. "It is in the doldrums," one trader said. "We are waiting for someone to take a lead in this market. There is a lot of action in sugar and coffee, and all the locals are over there." Technically, traders pegged May chart support at its life-of-contract low of $1,252 set last week.
