But with only 2,945 lots changing hands on the day, traders said activity was unimpressive. "The CFTC report was probably bullish, but I do not think the market reacted that much to it," one trader said. "It really a quiet day." Spot March futures ended up $9 at $1,323 a tonne after ranging from $1,326 to $1,313. Most-active May rose $11 to $1,352, while the outer months finished $3 to $12 higher. Cocoa prices spent the bulk of the session in positive territory after CFTC data showed speculators were net short by 1,658 contracts to Jan. 28. Traders said a weak dollar against Sterling was supportive because arbitrage favored dollar-denominated CSCE cocoa. Technically, traders said the March contract would need to get through $1,343-$1,345 to attract substantial buying interest. On the downside, $1,307-$1,309 was likely to provide strong support, they said. In fundamental news, French chocolate manufacturer Cantalou said it was planning to build a cocoa bean processing plant in Ivory Coast with a capacity of 60,000 tonnes a year. The news comes in line with an increasing shift in processing from consumer countries to origins. 041019 MET feb 97
