CSCE coffee ends down sharply, specs take profits
NEW YORK, Jan 30 (Reuter) - CSCE coffee futures pulled
back sharply on Thursday, retreating from steep gains racked
up the previous session as speculators moved to take profits,
traders said.
"The market was expecting a correction," said Refco
analyst Ann Prendergast. "It had gone up significantly and was
due for a retracement in order to sustain the upsurge."
Traders also noted today's sell-off was spurred by talk a
leading coffee consultant forecast next season's Brazil crop
would come in well above a string of recent estimates.
March delivery tumbled 4.30 cents a lb on the day, to
140.30 cents, after ranging between 146.10 and 140.00 cents.
Second-month May ended 4.40 cents lower, at 134.50 cents,
while the outer months closed down 1.10 to 4.10 cents.
Talk former USDA representative Leon Yallouz pegged the
1997/98 Brazil crop at more than 27 million 60-kg bags in a
preliminary estimate based on field trips made in September
weighed on sentiment, market sources said.
"It was sobering," Prendergast said. "People respect his
word."
Yallouz's forecast differs sharply compared with
preliminary estimates by the Brazilian government, which have
pegged the country's coming 1997/98 coffee crop between 18
million and 20 million bags compared with an estimated 25
million bags a year earlier.
But traders in Brazil said that while rumors of the
Yallouz report swirled around last week at a coffee seminar in
Rio de Janiero, no one has been able to confirm it.
"That figure was circulating last week but I asked
(Yallouz) and he said, 'No I don't have this, I am travelling
to the interior after the seminar and I will only have a
forecast in March'," said Francisco Ourique, one of the
organizers of the seminar.
"For anyone who deals in coffee, they know that making a
forecast for the 1997/98 crop in September is impossible," he
added.
New York arabica futures have surged some 27 percent since
the start of January as speculators bought heavily on supply
concerns. Heightening supply worries has been uncertainty
about next season's Brazilian harvest at a time coffee
inventories are near 20-year lows.
However, many New York traders eagerly await forecasts
from non-Brazilian entities, such as the USDA, as some
operators anticipated a further recovery in the Brazilian crop
following severe frost damage in 1994.
Although the USDA is not officially slated to release a
1997/98 Brazilian production estimate until June, market
sources expect them to put out an unannounced preliminary
forecast earlier in the year.
Traders brushed aside news Colombia will announce cuts in
coffee exports next week under the terms of a ACPC retention
plan agreed January 23, as well as news they planned to draw
up a detailed report on the specific impact on the country's
crop due to recent heavy rains.
"All that is already in the market," one trader said. "We
already heard about the cuts and we already heard about the
rains."
Elsewhere, Guatemala's National Coffee Association
(Anacafe) said after the close Thursday the country's 1996/97
coffee harvest will end at 3 million 60 kg bags, a seven
percent reduction from October forecasts of 3.2 million bags,
due to strong rains and cold affecting the harvest in the
northern Guatemala.
Volume Thursday reached an estimated 11,643 lots.
