Elsewhere, the other metals in the sector largely matched the gyrations of the copper market, though traders were quick to note tightness in the aluminium and zinc markets. Three months delivery copper was last at $2,260, down on its opening high of $2,273 and Thursday's LME kerb close of $2,277, while the cash to three months backwardation settled at just below $300, versus $290. Traders said the market had expected a rise in inventories of between 3,000 and 5,000 tonnes but in the event 12,775 tonnes of metal arrived at LME warehouses. According to official LME figures 3,925 tonnes arrived at Long Beach, while 600 tonnes moved into Baltimore. In Europe a net rise of 3,450 was seen in Rotterdam and 3,150 tonnes in Hamburg. Singapore stocks rose by 1,000 tonnes. Traders said overall the physical market remained tight and believed the stock increase was largely due to the high backwardations. With strong backwardation in place several traders said the market was unlikely to experience a full-scale sell-off. They pegged support at $2,230 and $2,200. Resistance was seen at $2,280, followed by $2,400. Traders also said the current tightness is unlikely to ease significantly and had the potential to flare further as positions are rolled forward to Feb/Mar and Mar/Apr dates which also remained tight. Aluminium spreads remained tight, a condition seen in the narrowing of the cash to three months contango to around $20 from $24 on Thursday. Traders said the rise in inventories of 350 tonnes helped to slightly dent upside sentiment during Friday moring trading, though they expected stocks to register falls over the coming weeks. Forward selling was also capping the market. Last business was at $1,641, against $1,642. The forward spreads in zinc narrowed also, while stocks continued their long string of declines. Traders said the two factors combined could spark short-covering and another attack on resistance towards $1,200 near-term. It was last at $1,139, a loss of $12. A stocks fall of 726 tonnes helped to underpin nickel. Traders noted that 720 tonnes of nickel was taken off warrant from LME Rotterdam warehouses, while six tonnes left Antwerp. No material was delivered in suggesting thephysical market was tight. Three months nickel settled at $7,370, down $15. Lead drifted in thin trading and was last at $706, down $6. Tin was unchanged at $6,050 with several traders saying the market had the potential to snap higher in latter trading on the back of investment fund short-covering.
