"Three months is not getting any attention in the ring," a trader noted, with all eyes on the approaching first tight dates of January. Benchmark three months copper finished the London Metal Exchange (LME) morning kerb at $2,269 per tonne, up $7 from Wednesday's kerb close. But it made no attempt to repeat the morning's short-lived run-up to $2,282, just above stiff resistance. Cash to threes backwardation, however, widened considerably to $280/$285 by the end of the morning kerb, up some $30 from Wednesday evening. Cash/February was also notably tighter around $203, up some $20, while the January 29/30 dates were bid at $20. Aluminium cash-threes were equally lacklustre, holding within a range between $1,628 and $1,633 througout the morning's trading to finish the kerb $1 weaker at $1,629. The emphasis was on covering short April dates, trader said. "People were short these dates, and with prices heading up so quickly recently, they all decided to cover today," one said. Borrowing to cover shorts, specifically on April 9, contracted the cash-threes contango to $26, compared to $29 on Wednesday, a trader noted. The April-June contango tightened to $6 from $8, while April/threes was in $1 backwardation. On the charts aluminium still looked bullish, but needed to close about $1,530 to look really constructive, traders added. Zinc, like copper, made an attempt to dazzle early in the day, but eased back to $1,148, down $2 from Wednesday's kerb close, after peaking at $1,154 in the morning. "There are signs that prices may be reaching a plateau for now. Good support is provided by a short-term uptrend at $1,138/40," broker Brandeis said in a commentary. Nickel was slightly higher at $7,315, up $35, while lead was just $1 down at $712. Tin was extremely quiet and barely changed at $6,025, up $5. Alloy was last bid virtually uchanged at $1,535/26.
