Elsewhere, nickel's recent impressive spike continued as fresh short-covering sparked buy-stops. Aluminium continued to consolidate around $1,550 after finding support from forward buying. Three months delivery copper was last at $2,203, versus Monday's LME kerb close of $2,195. Traders said copper bounced back from a low of $2,177 on the back of a widening in nearby spreads and cash buying despite the LME stocks rise of 11,475 tonnes. Official LME data showed that 10,500 tonnes of material was delivered into Singapore, possibly of Chinese origin. They explained that the delivery in the Far East was unlikely to have any notable impact on the European physical market which remains tight. "Premiums for European spot copper remain tight and are showing few signs of easing," one said. Copper's cash to three months backwardation widened by around $5 to $115/$120. Nickel continued its firmness as fresh short-covering bolstered recent investment fund buying. Traders said chartwise the market has the potential to streak higher if prices break above the late Novemeber 1996 high of $7,090. "There are a string of buy-stops waiting to be triggered just above the market," one LME floor trader said. Last business was at $7,000, well up on $6,860. Forward buying and light broker short-covering helped to underpin aluminium which has recently been languishing around $1,550. But rising LME stocks are helping to hinder significant upside moves at present. "Forward demand is picking up which suggests prices could soon move higher," one trader said. Aluminium settled the morning at $1,552, unchanged. Zinc was underpinned by investment fund interest but failed to move significantly. It was last $2 up at $1,066.
