Prices hovered in negative territory for most the session, but the most-active December position rebuffed a test of key chart support toward $1,404. December fell $9 a tonne on the day, to $1,406, trading from $1,405 to $1,415. Spot September also fell $9, to end at $1,363. Volume was light, at an estimated 4,982 lots. The substantial downturn in September's open interest after Thursday's late-session rally weighed on prices today, as traders grew more confident the contract would enter notice period without a sudden scramble to square books. September's open position fell 3,411 lots, to 12,693, as of Thursday's close. Open interest on December delivery grew by 2,911 lots, to 24,999, as traders rolled positions into the deferred months. Fundamentally, the outlook for cocoa looked little changed. A preliminary survey conducted by a leading trade house and leaked into the market earlier this week confirmed earlier observations of Ivory Coast's upcoming harvest, putting it some 20 percent below this year's record tally. But without a more definitive assessment of the crop, the market may be destinted to trade within a $100-range for the next few weeks, traders said. "This time of year the market tends to feed off reports coming out of West Africa," said one analyst. "As far as the trade are concerned, they are trying not to commit themselves at the moment." 121057 MET aug 96
