Merino fleece was mixed, with 19/21 microns one percent cheaper, 20m 0.5 percent cheaper, 22m up to 0.5 percent cheaper, 23m 0.5 percent dearer, 24/25m one percent dearer and 26m unchanged, with merino skirtings generally unchanged. In crossbreds, 27/29m were up to 0.5 percent dearer, 28/31m up to 0.5 percent cheaper, and 30m 0.5 percent cheaper. Cardings were generally unchanged. WI said Japan, China and Western Europe were principal operators with good support from most sectors of the trade. Of the 24,509 bales offered, 13.4 percent were passed in. In early Fremantle trading, merino fleece of 20m was one percent cheaper, 21m up to one percent dearer, 22m fully firm and 23/24/25m one percent dearer. Merino skirtings were yet to start selling and locks were slightly cheaper. The early pass-in rate was 19 percent, WI said. WI said sales will resume in the week beginning January 5 in Melbourne and Fremantle after the three week mid-season Christmas recess. Competition from New Zealand was cited as the reason behind this factor. Prices in New Zealand are at seasonal lows for many categories, with currency factors also helping to make wool from there appreciably cheaper, compared with the sterling-priced British product, traders said. Merino fleece was mixed, with 19 microns one percent cheaper, 20m 1.5 percent cheaper, 21m up to 0.5 percent cheaper, 22m slightly dearer, 23/24m up to 0.5 percent dearer, 25m one percent dearer and 26m 2.5 percent dearer. Merino skirtings of 21m were generally unchanged. WI said in crossbreds, 27m was one percent dearer, 28/29m slightly cheaper, 30m one percent cheaper and 31m 0.5 percent cheaper, while cardings were slightly cheaper. Patchy new business was indicated in the home trade, but everyone in the market was increasingly aware of the approach of the Christmas holiday period, traders said.
