Merino fleece was mixed, with 19 micron one percent dearer, 20m slightly dearer, 21/25m unchanged, 22/23/24m 0.5 percent cheaper and 26m slightly cheaper. In merino skirtings, 19/20m were slightly dearer. In cardings, locks were slightly cheaper and crutchings were slightly dearer. No crossbreds were offered. WI said competition was general wih most sectors active. Of the 30,012 bales offered, 8.5 percent were passed in. Competitive firms in Continental Europe and those able to find ways of escaping the full currency impact, are correspondingly better placed, they added. Deliveries in the UK wool textile industry are said to be going out less well than recently, and with Christmas getting nearer, this can mean a slow-down will occur. There was continuing uncertainty about how the Far Eastern financial situation may affect the wool market, as well as international trading patterns for textiles. 031132 MET dec 97
