UK traders were said to be increasingly unhappy at the prospect of continuing sterling strength and possibly still higher UK interest rates. The call for deliveries tended to fall off with the approach of Christmas a possible influence. New export orders were said to be more difficult to obtain than ever and there was anxiety about import competition from newly devalued countries in the Pacific region. 051102 MET dec 97
