Most merino fleece lost ground with 19 micron 0.5 percent cheaper, 20/21/23/24m one percent cheaper and 22/25/26m slightly dearer. Merino skirtings were unchanged. In crossbreds, 27/29/31m were 0.5 percent cheaper, 28m unchanged and 30m slightly dearer. In cardings, lambs were up to two percent cheaper while locks and crutchings were unchanged. WI said China, Japan, Western Europe and Italy were the principal buyers, supported by local mills. Of the 33,543 bales offered, 10.2 percent were passed in. Competitive firms in Continental Europe and those able to find ways of escaping the full currency impact, are correspondingly better placed, they added. Deliveries in the UK wool textile industry are said to be going out less well than recently, and with Christmas getting nearer, this can mean a slow-down will occur. There was continuing uncertainty about how the Far Eastern financial situation may affect the wool market, as well as international trading patterns for textiles. 041116 MET dec 97
