Merino fleece was mixed, with 19/21/22 microns up to 0.5 percent cheaper, 20m up to one percent cheaper, 23/24/25m 0.5 percent dearer and 26m slightly dearer, while merino skirtings were fully firm. In crossbreds, 27/31m were up to 0.5 percent dearer, 28/30m 0.5 percent cheaper, and 29m slightly cheaper. Cardings were generally unchanged. WI said Japanese interests including China were principal operators with good support from Western Europe and most sectors of the trade. Of the 25,401 bales offered, 7.9 percent were passed in. In early Fremantle trading, merino fleece of 20m was one percent cheaper, 21m slightly cheaper, 22m unchanged, 23m slightly dearer and 24m fully firm, while merino skirtings were unchanged. Competitive firms in Continental Europe and those able to find ways of escaping the full currency impact, are correspondingly better placed, they added. Deliveries in the UK wool textile industry are said to be going out less well than recently, and with Christmas getting nearer, this can mean a slow-down will occur. There was continuing uncertainty about how the Far Eastern financial situation may affect the wool market, as well as international trading patterns for textiles. 021216 MET dec 97
