The trade was responsible for most of the paltry trading volume, the funds selling into the rally all the way up. March cocoa ended at $1,578 a tonne, down $19, after trading between $1,581 and $1,562 a tonne, the lowest level since Aug 18. Spot December ended $23 lower at $1,529. "We saw some manufacturers buying at the low end of the range," a broker said. "It didn't take much to move this market higher. There was barely any volume behind it." Traders said the market was due for a correction, with the nine-day relative strength indicator well into over-sold territory at a life-of-contract low of 26 percent Monday. "The market is saturated with shorts," another trader said. "It's only natural to see a retracement of sorts." From the Nov 11 high of $1,677 in the market contract, a 38.1 percent retracement would be $1,603. Chartists called near-term resistance at $1,577. "If we can take that out, we got a shot at a substantial rally," one floor broker said, adding that the market would look to build a base here. Estimated volume totaled 2,373 lots at 1300 EST. The British pound was $1.6812 at 1500 EST, but little arbitrage business was seen, traders said. The fundamentals are unchanged with strong crop yields expected from West Africa. Tendered notices jumped 1,552 original lots and 138 re-tendered lots to 9,757 lots, which limited the momentum of the buying, sources said. 031127 MET dec 97
