Benchmark December cocoa rose $7 to $1,644 per tonne on the day, ending down from an early high of $1,656. Second-position March rose $4 to $1,676. Traders said speculative short-covering accounted for most of the day's gains, though scattered trade interest was noted as well. Cocoa prices have tumbled five percent from a high of $1,739 reached one week ago. "The market is trying to correct the oversold condition that it has had since last week," said one broker. "When you drop $100 in a straight line it's time for a small bounce." Some traders also mentioned talk that an independent crop surveyor had put forth an updated appraisal of Ivory Coast's crop. Anticipation of a new report from U.S.-based forecaster Hans Kilian was one of the factors cited in Tuesday's fall to one-month lows. Otherwise, the market displayed little reaction to a broad decline in U.K. cocoa grindings for the third quarter. Grindings fell by 15.9 percent to 41,180 tonnes compared with the same period a year earlier. While the number was higher than many participants had anticipated, traders said the results were overshadowed by discussions of the developing crop in West Africa. Rainfall levels have picked up early this month in Ivory Coast following an unusually dry September, local weather analysts said Wednesday. Concern that below-average precipitation would harm emerging cocoa pods has helped underpin prices over the past few months. The market would have trouble returning to its recent highs of the current rainfall pattern continues, dealers said. "The return of rains into West Africa has helped calm a few fears," a second trader said. On the charts, support was noted from $1,615-1,611 basis December, with resistance seen toward today's high of $1,656. An estimated 5,670 lots changed hands on the day. 161126 MET oct 97
