Traders said buying by locals and small speculators as well as scale-down industry buying pushed prices to their highest levels this week, but stopped just short of filling a key chart gap up to $1,610 a tonne basis September. Benchmark September futures rose to a session high of $1,609, but its inability to fill the gap sparked a round of local long liquidation, traders said. At the close, September stood at $1,599, up $5 on the day. Spot July gained $8, to settle at $1,580, while the remaining months finished $4 to $5 firmer. Speculators sold the market from the opening bell after weakness in London overnight. The benchmark September slid to a low of $1,575 a tonne -- down $19 -- before industry-related buying emerged to reverse momentum. Traders said New York cocoa was helped by a late burst of strength in London, where the benchmark LIFFE September contract closed at 1,054 stg, down three stg, but well off the intraday low of 1,042 stg. Technically, traders said today's firmer finish was viewed as constructive. The $1,610 mark was still an upside target for September, they said, with the next level of resistance seen at $1,625. On the downside, strong support was noted near the day's low at $1,575. Although no fresh fundamentals were in the market, Refco Inc. analyst Ann Prendergast said concerns an El Nino weather pattern could adversely impact many cocoa-growing regions would continue to underpin the market. "I think we're in for a static period where cocoa will be pushed around by exaggerated El Nino fears," Prendergast said. She added that ample world stocks and the prospect of another sizable crop in top-producer Ivory Coast in 1997/98 may temper any upswing. The day's volume was fairly light, at an estimated 5,827 lots.
