September futures slid $52, to end at $1,562, amid heavy selling on the part of commodity funds. The market tumbled from the opening bell, falling $89 a tonne in New York to a three-week low of $1,525. Scale-down trade buying helped the market to take back nearly half the losses by the close. New York cocoa prices have declined by nearly nine percent in the past three days. Although there has been relatively little in the way of crop news during that time, analysts said a growing consensus that next season's West African harvest would fare better than originally thought set the stage for the downturn. 041222 MET jul 97
