Although the market managed to claw its way back into positive territory in the afternoon, cocoa prices finished well off session highs set earlier in the day. Benchmark September peaked at $1,722 a tonne, but closed at $1,690, up $7 on the day. Spot July ended $9 higher, at $1,660, while the back months gained $3 to $11. New York cocoa softened at the outset, defying pre-opening expectations, as traders followed through on Wednesday weak close, dealers said.
